Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is the characteristic most often considered when an individual thinks about wellness. To be clear physical wellness incorporates exercise, sleep, diet, personal hygiene, the use of drugs or alcohol, and more—all lifestyle choices that affect a person’s physical self.

The challenge with physical wellness is that all these characteristics must be kept in balance to maximize physical wellness. Just like having an automobile that has smooth acceleration, a wonderful ride, an amazing sound system, etc. if the vehicle has a flat tire, it is not a good means of transportation until that flat tire is repaired and fully inflated.

In a similar vein if I am running, lifting weights, and sleeping an appropriate amount, but consuming too much alcohol, I will not find I am running on all cylinders until I get the alcohol consumption under control, to stay with the automobile analogy.

The crux of all seven dimensions of wellness is that they must be encouraged at places of employment to achieve maximum productivity. Not to mention, it is the right thing to do for your team. (1)

Being physically well has resulted in improved grades among students and employees alike. Sure, there are the William-Howard-Taft exceptions to grand achievement and poor physical health, but even he eventually realized that his poor physical health made him less efficient and effective.

This week, challenge yourself to improve some aspect of your physical wellness. As the old adage says: When is the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago. When is the next best time? Today.

The same may be said for embracing physical wellness. Start today for a better you and a better organization.

Select one of the aspects of physical wellness and make a conscientious decision to improve this upcoming week. Whether it is to walk, run, cycle, get good sleep, reduce alcohol consumption, or increase vegetable intake— start somewhere.
