Lead Individuals, Individually

When we look to lead and manage employees it is all about the individual employee. A recent report from Bain & Company supports the fact that there are different types of employees working in your organization and they are motivated by different things. We as leaders need to understand and embrace this reality

The report identifies the six types of employees as: 1) Operators, 2) Givers, 3) Artisans, 4) Explorers, 5) Strivers, and 6) Pioneers. Each of these individuals are going to be motivated to succeed and contribute in different ways.

  1. Operators are work-to-live individuals. They are team players who desire to come to work, earn a good living, and go home where they find their self-worth. Make certain these individuals have the opportunity to disconnect at the end of the day.

  2. Givers desires to make the world a better place and desire to help others. Make certain that they have the opportunity help others.

  3. Artisans are in pursuit of mastery and autonomy. Give them the time and resources to passionately pursue their goals.

  4. Explorers value freedom and experiences. They desire variety and excitement. Place these individuals in a role that meets these needs.

  5. Strivers are motivated by the next promotion and monetary compensation. Note that others may desire adequate compensation, but strivers measure their worth in this way.

  6. Pioneers desire total control and are entrepreneurial. Make a place for them to chart a new course for your company.

It is important to recognize though that the division between these individual types is likely to be a spectrum more than a basket. Individuals may sit in the middle of two types, for example. Ultimately, this research shows that the best employers lead individuals as just that, individuals.

As you connect with your team this week go ahead and ask where they see themselves. Ask where you see yourself as well and realize that what motivates you may not motivate those you lead.
